Course Introduction

Three central goals comprise this course:

1. To prepare you for applying for admission into the nationally-acclaimed teacher education program at Montclair State University.
2. To provide you with an initial field experience (30 hours) in an urban school setting.
3. To broaden your understanding of the major social, political, and economic issues surrounding public education in the United States and specifically, New Jersey.

By the end of the semester, you will know whether or not the teacher education program at MSU is a good fit for you. Your field observations, class discussions and written assignments will prepare you to write an outstanding admissions essay for the Teacher Education program here at Montclair State University. Some of you (transfer students) may even complete the admissions interview process during the semester. To further assist you in planning for a successful semester here are some additional suggestions:

• Download and review the course syllabus & calendar. Make sure you understand all course requirements and policies. Keep in mind a course syllabus is a binding contract between the individual student and course instructor. Come to the first class session with questions.
• Read and study the first set of readings (Session #1)
• Subscribe via email to this web site so that you automatically receive course updates.

Note that you must be present on the first day of class in order to secure your field placement in this course. As stated in WESS, students who are not present on the first day of class must drop the course or receive an "F" on their transcript. Note: Religious observance is not considered an absence. Please consult the course syllabus for information on navigating absences.
